It has been a bad year for sweet peas at Pig Row. A bad summer, a cold start and a wet season has stunted the early growth and only now in late August are we seeing the first flowers.
In 2011, we were awash with sweet peas and each room in the house had several vases. You can see the difference in growth between the years in the photos.
This may be down to a slight change in environment that is being felt across the country. We have decided on Pig Row to sow our 2013 sweet peas this autumn and over winter them in cold frames and glasshouse. If we then have a cold start, warm spring and wet summer it shouldn't matter as the early growth will not be knocked back. It is that first few weeks of growth on any plant that is the most important. Maybe next year we will have better growth, and more flowers by July.
