Make it - Festive Vodka

At Pig Row our thoughts turn to Christmas presents or more to what we are going to make to give this year.

We already have a lovely big batch of Piccalilli although the Strawberry and Geranium jam we made with the festive season in mind is long gone.

On hunting through our notebooks we came across a recipe we have not made for a couple of years: Festive Vodka. Absolutely delicious and a doddle to make it makes fantastic presents (if you don't drink it first).

Festive Vodka

What you will need:
  • 700ml vodka
  • 250g dark brown sugar
  • 100g mixed peel
  • 250g sultanas
  • 150g raisins
  • Grated rind and juice of 1 orange
  • 1 tsp almond essence
  • 6 cloves
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 2 vanilla beans, split, seeds scraped
  • 1/2 tsp nutmeg
  • 1 tsp mixed spice

How to make it:

Place the ingredients in a large bowl, cover with cling film and place in the fridge for a week. Stir the mixture everyday. At the end of the week strain the contents through a very fine sieve, pressing down to extract all the liquid. Pour the liquid back into the vodka bottle and screw on the cap tightly. The vodka will keep in the fridge for up to 6 months.

You can even save the fruit to include in a boozy cake or fruit pie. Bottoms up. Hic!
