Wartime Garden: 1943

It's Saturday and the weather is turgid, morose and downright wet. The temperatures will plummet tonight but as we research the gardens of 70 years ago we find a stack of war propaganda songs that can't help make you smile as well as squirm but 1943 was a year of growing surprises.

The Mexican farmer in Paricutin, Dionisio Pulido has a nasty shock when one of his fertile fields spews forth a 1312 foot volcano. That's the same height we garden at at Pig Row.

Back home in 1943 and we were on for a hot summer with temperatures soaring 32 degrees celsius. Oh, how we have all dreamed of that this summer. Let's hope that 2013 repeats 1943 in its weather and we can all grow something.
