Pulling Up The Potatoes

On a day we pull down the old rotten bean poles in the front garden for fire wood, our attention turns to the spuds we have planted in bags. Though we were late in putting them in, D has tended them best he could; he's had it all this year, a hot summer which is never good for growing potatoes. Though we added our soil, watered the sacks until water ran through them, the heat was relentless and the herb garden baked. Today though, we are pulling up the potatoes.

We only selected two varieties this time around for growing, they are, Ambo and Casablanca potatoes (Pennard, 1kg seed bags). We kept the seed potato weight down this time because we didn't want to be left over with too many spuds. Three potatoes went into each sack and we waited, we watered, we enjoyed the sun. D got excited. Let's get this over first, even though D is happy with them, the yields are incredibly disappointing. We know this has more to do with the hot summer we had than the varieties. They're not a patch on the Sarpo Mira we grew in 2017, and though the yields that year were down due to my spinal problems (couldn't water as much), the yields here for Ambo barely made 2kg from 4 sacks. This variety was grown in an organic off the shelf peat free compost. We wanted to compare between this from a local garden centre, on offer (and we see why), with Dalefoot.

What we do notice though is the Ambo and Casablanca grown in Dalefoot Compost has fared much better, with uniform growth and a higher yield of around 5kg over 4 sacks. That's more than double the yield than in the over 4 sacks. However, we do have to acknowledge a hot summer and the impact is has had on potato growing across the UK; it's been a hard season for potato growers and though we don't have enough to take us through winter, it will make several appreciated meals. Something D is looking forward to. Something he has been happy to grow.
